Straighter teeth, explained simply
At Portadown Orthodontics we offer health service and private orthodontic treatment for children, teenagers and adults, explaining every step clearly – from your first scan through to your retainers.
Portadown Orthodontics is located within Heathwood House (DJ Maguire Clinic), 87 Bridge Street, Portadown BT63 5AA.
We are the only specialist orthodontic practice in County Armagh. Your dentist can refer you to us, or you can refer yourself if you are looking for private treatment or the cross-border (HSE) scheme. Just fill in the right form online.
Waiting for your child’s health service assessment?
Every child referred by their dentist is offered a free assessment to check whether they are eligible for health service (NHS) orthodontic treatment. This assessment normally takes 6 to 12 months to come round, and treatment then tends to start 3 to 6 months later, depending on the case. If you would rather it happened sooner, you can self-refer, or ask your dentist to refer your child, for a private rapid assessment, which costs £155. Because you meet the orthodontist at your Rapid Teen Assessment, it combines your records appointment and your treatment planning appointment in one visit. It does not make your child more likely to get health service treatment – it simply skips the waiting list for the assessment.
Your journey, step by step
Records appointment
We take some photographs and a 3D digital scan of your teeth.
We review your records
Your scan and photos are carefully reviewed by the orthodontist, and we contact you within 12 weeks.
Your treatment planning appointment
At this appointment the orthodontist tells you whether health service funding applies and whether to start now or wait, and agrees your treatment plan with you.
Treatment
If you decide to go ahead, we fit your fixed braces or clear aligners and see you regularly to check how you are getting on.
Retainers
After treatment, retainers keep your teeth straight. Private treatment includes two sets. Teeth keep moving throughout life, so keep wearing them.
A fully digital practice
All our records, retainers and aligners use digital scanners, so there’s no impression material and nothing gooey or messy to bite into.
Keep your smile straight
Teeth can drift back whatever your age. Retainers keep them in place – so wear them each night while you sleep (8 to 10 hours) for as long as you want straight teeth.
If your teeth move and we did your original braces, it will cost £1,245 per arch (£2,490 for upper and lower) for us to treat you again to straighten your teeth. Otherwise, our standard private prices apply. A second course of treatment is never paid for by the health service.
Patient leaflets
Our advice sheets and posters are free to download and read at home.

Orthodontic treatment in Portadown
What do braces cost in Portadown?
At Portadown Orthodontics, private metal braces and clear aligners are the same price, set by complexity: from £2,900 for super mild cases (usually less than 2 months), from £3,900 for moderate cases (usually up to 12 months) and from £4,900 for complex cases (usually more than a year, may involve extractions). For those who qualify, health service (NHS) treatment is also available. See our costs page and our braces cost guide for details.
Can I have health service braces in Portadown?
Yes, if you qualify. The health service (NHS) only provides braces when teeth are significantly out of position, which the orthodontist assesses with a national scoring system called IOTN (Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need). We normally only treat patients younger than 18 for health service treatment. If your need is too mild to qualify, private treatment is available. See health service or private.
How long is the wait for health service braces?
For health service (NHS) treatment, expect to wait around 6 to 12 months for an assessment, and then 3 to 6 months before treatment begins, depending on the case. There is no waiting list for private treatment.
Do I need a referral?
Health service (NHS) treatment needs a referral from your dentist. For private treatment, you can refer yourself through our self-referral form or by contacting the practice.
