Across Northern Ireland, braces are provided either by the health service (NHS) or privately. This is how the two compare.
Health service (NHS) braces
- Only available when teeth are significantly out of position. The orthodontist assesses this with a scoring system called IOTN.
- Your dentist needs to refer you.
- Waits are usually 6–12 months for assessment, then 3–6 months to start treatment, depending on the case.
- The health service does not provide clear aligners.
Private braces
- Private treatment has no waiting list.
- Self-referral is welcome.
- Metal braces and Smartee clear aligners cost the same: from £2,900, £3,900 or £4,900, depending on how complex the case is.
- Under 18 and not eligible for health service braces? Private braces or Smartee clear aligners cost £2,900 through our under-18s offer (usually £3,900) for as long as the patient is under 18. See private braces for under-18s.
Paying monthly
You can pay a £900 deposit, then the rest in 12 monthly payments. A £150 plan fee is added to the remaining balance and divided across your 12 monthly payments. See our costs, the braces cost guide and health service or private.
Frequently asked questions
Can I choose private treatment while on the NHS waiting list?
Yes. You can switch to private treatment whenever you like.
My child’s IOTN score is too low – what now?
Private treatment is still an option. While your child is under 18, private braces or Smartee clear aligners are £2,900 through our under-18s offer (usually £3,900).
