Food gets caught in braces, so cleaning takes a bit longer. Go through these steps after each meal and before bed.
Step by step
Fluoride toothpaste
Brush after every meal and before bed.
Above, on and below
Brush above the brace, over it and below it, and along the gum line.
Interdental brushes
Clean in between the brackets and underneath the wire.
Do not rinse
Leave the toothpaste on your teeth so the fluoride carries on working.
Check in a mirror
Your brace and teeth should look shiny and clean.
Extra tips
- Use a fluoride mouthwash every day, at a different time from brushing.
- Take a travel toothbrush with you so you can clean your teeth after lunch.
- Poor cleaning can leave permanent white marks and tooth decay.
- Carry on going to your regular dentist for check-ups.

With fluoride toothpaste, after each meal and before bed.
Should I rinse after brushing?
No. If you leave the toothpaste on your teeth, the fluoride carries on working. Use a fluoride mouthwash at another time of day.
